Solar Energy
About Solar Energy - Read
This
First
Solar energy can be used for
anything
from a trickle battery charger to a whole house system. Our small
5
watt and 30 watt solar panels are 5 to 6 volt, and our 60 watt panels
are
12 volt. We use only 60 watt panels as they are easy to ship via
UPS and because we get volume prices on purchasing only one size.
Only
a small 5 watt system will only need just the solar panel without
batteries
or a solar controller. Batteries are required so power can be
provided
when the sun is not shinning. All but the 5 watt system will
require
a solar controller to keep the batteries from over charging as the
solar
panels will overcharge and damage batteries. An inverter must be
used
to power 120 volt or 240 volt house voltage. The inverter
converts 12,
24, or 48 volts DC voltage to 120 or 240 volts AC voltage. Only
very
large systems over 3,000 watts will use a 240 volt inverter to power
both
240 and 120 volt loads. Keep in mind that a 12 volt current is
always
10 times the current at 120 volts and that the proper size wires must
be
used to handle the high 12 volt current. Using 24 or 48 volts
will
require smaller battery and inverter input wires and is best for larger
systems.
At least a 960 watt system with at least a 3,000 watt inverter will be
required
to provide 50% to 80% of the 120 volt power for a house. The
3,000 watt
inverter will need to be supplied with wire capable of supplying about
300
amps if using 12 volts, and if using 24 volts the wire will only need
to
supply 150 amps. The proper solar controller with the proper
relays
and batteries capable of supplying the high current will also be
needed.
Our deluxe solar controller is capable of automatically changing the
the
power source from solar or house power as needed with the proper wiring
of
loads you want powered with solar. There is more information on
solar
controllers, inverters, and batteries below. Make sure you read
our
entire page below before ordering. Before installing a solar
system
you should take every step possible to use less power such as replacing
all
light bulbs with florescent or LED bulbs. These bulbs are
available below. Tax credits may be available in your
area for installing
solar systems. The federal tax credit has many restrictions and
must
be an on grid system which is very expensive and in most cases is not
worth
the extra cost. Contact your government agencies to see what tax
credits may be available in your area. To help you to
select the
proper system for your needs see the table below.

Solar Controllers
We manufacture our own Solar
Controllers
which are all Micro Controller controlled and provide many features not
found
on any other controllers. All our controllers come
with
heavy duty steel enclosures with multiple knockouts. They are all
for
indoor use only, can be instaled on 12, 24 or 48 volt DC
systems
using 6 or 12 volt batteries. The wattage or current should not
be
exceeded so make sure you order the proper controller for the wattage
of
your solar panels. For example, a 960 watt system of solar panels
that
is wired 24 volts will only require 40 amps but because it is a 960
watt
system you should use the model SCD2 controller as the model SCD is
only
rated for 480 watts. Our basic controller is a low cost
controller
for systems up to 140 Watts or 10 amps. It has indicator lights
to
indicate the battery voltage, low battery warning, and solar charge off
when the batteries are fully charged. Our deluxe controllers
have
indicator lights to indicate, battery voltage, night, and solar power
off.
They also have a circuit to automatically disconnect the
solar
power and connect the house grid power to the AC load if the battery
voltage
is low and then automatically connect the solar power and disconnect
the
house grid power when the batteries are partially charged again.
An
optional relay is required for this option. This
system
prevents the batteries from excessive discharging, which shortens the
life
of the batteries, and also protects the inverter from low voltage and
shutting
off and not coming back on and other low voltage problems. Some
inverters
shut off and do not come back on until they are manually reset when the
input
voltage is below 11 volts, and some inverters will turn off and on when
the
voltage is low which may damage some AC loads.

Inverters
An inverter must be used to power
120
volt or 240 volt house loads. The inverter converts the 12, 24,
or
48 volt DC voltage to 120 or 240 volt AC voltage. Only very large
systems
over 3,000 watts will use a 240 volt inverter to power both 240 and 120
volt
loads. Keep in mind that a 12 volt current is always
10
times the current at 120 volts and that the proper size wires must be
used
to handle the high 12 volt current. Using 24 or 48 volts will
require
smaller battery and inverter input wires and is best for larger
The inverter typically has 2 to 4
times
the power capability of the solar panels so that it can supply power to
higher
power loads as needed such as a refrigerator, washer, or kitchen
appliances.
The solar current is the charging current only and is the solar watts
divided
by the system voltage.
There are two types of inverters. Low
cost modified sign wave and are what you should use in most cases on
small 1000 Watt or less systems.
These are off grid inverters which are not connected to your house
power.
Any AC loads must be connected only to the solar power or house power
but
not both at the same time. True sign wave inverters are more
expensive
and may be off grid or on grid inverters. An on grid system is
required along with many other restrictions to get the federal and some
other tax
credits. Contact your government agencies to see what tax credits
may
be available in your area.
Batteries
The batteries must be capable of
storing
and supplying the proper power to the inverter. You will need to
use
12 volt batteries or two 6 volt batteries in series to get 12 volts, or
four
6 volt or two 12 volt to get 24 volts, or eight 6 volt or four 12 volt
to
get 48 volts. The number of batteries needed depends on the size
of the solar system, inverter, and load desired to supply.
Sams
Club and Costco have 6 volt Golf Cart batteries in most areas that are
a
very good battery for solar storage and are the battery we
recommend.
Batteries are costly and a battery life saver (BLS) should be used on
all
batteries. Every home should not be without one. See Below.
Battery Life Saver
(BLS)
What is The Battery Life Saver electronic
device?
The BLS is a patented electronic device that brings old and
weak
batteries back to life, restores functioning batteries to a like new condition, and extends battery life by
keeping
batteries from losing capacity and life due to the main cause of
battery
failure which is the buildup of lead sulfate on the battery plates.
Why is The Battery Life Saver electronic device needed?
75% to 80% of lead acid batteries fail prematurely because of
formation
of lead sulfate on the plates. These crystals cause batteries to become
unusable
at approximately one-third of their natural life. The Battery
Life
Saver electronic device dissolves the lead sulfate crystals.
How Does it Work?
Using breakthrough square wave technology, The Battery Life Saver
electronic
device sends a frequency signal to each crystal of lead sulfate,
causing
it to dissolve into lead and sulfuric acid. This restores the battery
to
its original condition and allows the electrical charge to be drawn
from
the battery.
Benefits of Using The Battery Life Saver electronic device.
It makes old batteries as good as new. It keeps new
batteries
like new, saving time and money. With
The
Battery Life Saver electronic device, more power is available from your
battery
and you need less power to charge it. By reducing the number of
batteries
that get thrown away and put in landfills, the Battery Life Saver
electronic
device protects the environment.
The Battery Life Saver electronic device Can be Used in Several
Different
Ways:
Connecting and using the Battery Life Saver is very easy, just
connect
it and forget it! Only one device is needed per battery system. The
device
works off of the power of the battery (the system
should
be charged regularly), and therefore does not have to be plugged
into
AC power. All of the units come with two leads(wires) just like jumper
cables.
Simply connect the red wire to the main positive battery terminal and
the
black wire to the main negative battery terminal. Some units are
equipped
with alligator type clips and others come with eye rings for permanent
attachment
to the batteries.
• To restore a dead or
barely usable
battery, connect the Battery Life Saver electronic device to
the
battery, along with your battery charger. The
Battery
Life Saver will gradually rejuvenate the battery or battery system with
every
cycle(charge and discharge). With the Battery Life Saver
connected,
fully charge the battery, then discharge the battery (the BLS operates
from
the power of the battery, thus you can use the BLS to discharge the
battery).
This process can take a couple cycles or many cycles
depending
on the condition and size of the battery or
battery
system.
• To
maximize
battery life, connect the Battery
Life
Saver electronic device to your new battery or battery system and let
it
be!
• To maintain working batteries,
install the Battery Life Saver electronic device on your
battery or on a bank of batteries. It rejuvenates the batteries
while
it is in service. This causes more power to be available from the
battery
and causes less power to be needed to charge the battery. This is the
best
way to extend the life of your batteries. It’s like having a brand new
battery
every time you use it.
We are stocking the models below
but
we have many different models available for different types and voltages of
battery
systems including 12, 24, 36, 42, 72, 84, 96, 120, 144, and 156 volt DC

provide
the voltage and application when contacting us.
For 12 and 24 volt battery
systems. Also

Wires and Wiring
The wires from battery to battery
and
to the inverter must be large enough to supply the proper current to
the inverter
and are usually much larger than the wires from the solar panels to the
controller
and batteries as these wires only carry the charging current. On
larger
systems it may be easier and more cost effective to use multiple wires
in
parallel instead of one large wire. For example, if you need 120
amps
you can use four #10 wires instead of one #2 wire.
Using multiple wires to the solar panels and batteries allows you to
wire
the them in groups of 4 to 12 depending on the voltage and wire
size.
Always locate the batteries, solar controler, and inverter as close as
possible
and within just a few feet. Before purchasing wire
you need
to know which inverter you are using and the DC and AC current and
voltage.
Using a higher DC voltage saves money on wire as the current is lower,
but
on smaller systems it is best to use 12 volts. A 24 volt system
uses
half the current of the 12 volt system and a 48 volt system uses half
the current of a 24 volt system. The batteries and solar panels
are wired
in series to get the desired voltage. For example, if you want a
24
volt system four 6 volt batteries or two 12 volt solar panels in series
will
create a 24 volt system. These will be connected in parallel to
others
as needed for higher capacities. You can purchase wire at your
local
electrical supply or hardware store. Check the current rating of
the
wire before you purchase.
